Sutton Hoon 600-luvulta peräisin olevan laivahauta on epäilemättä yksi 1900-luvun hienoimmista arkeologisista löydöistä. Innostus oli siis melkoinen, joskin ehkä hieman pelonsekainen, kun alkuvuodesta selvisi, että kaivauksista on tulossa elokuva. Arkeologia kun on esittetty aika ...jännässä... valossa elokuvissa tähän asti, joten tositapahtumiin perustuva kuvaus ei ollut ihan vähän luvattu. Ja miten suunnattomasti lopulta ilahduttikaan elokuva, jossa arkeologian tiimoilta ei juosta viidakossa tai edes Egyptissä, tai jossa ei ammuta tai harrasteta hyppypotkuja! Eikä ensimmäistäkään kirousta tai elävää kuollutta, ei edes salaliittoja! Vaikka natseja sentään saatiin mukaan tähänkin, välillisesti, tapahtuihan Sutton Hoon löytö aivan toisen maailmansodan alla.

The 7th century Sutton Hoo ship burial is, no doubt about that, one of the most remarkable 20th century archaeological finds. Therefore I had a bit mixed feelings when somewhere around new year I found out, that a movie about the Sutton Hoo excavations is on its way. Archaeology has been portrayed in ...interesting... ways in the past, so a movie based on true excavations was plenty promised. And how immensely delighted I was when it really turned out, that there was no running in the jungle or even in Egypt, no shooting or exotic martial arts. And no curses, nor living dead, not even conspirancies! Some nazies, though, albeit indirectly, because the events do take place when the second world war was an immediate threat.

Avajaisviikolla Suomen Netflixin katsotuimmaksi noussut (!!!) elokuvahan perustuu oikeaan Sutton Hoon löytöön vasta välillisesti, ensisijainen lähde elokuvalle on saman niminen kirja The Dig (John Preston, 2007). Tämä varmaan selittää sen, miksi taiteellisia vapauksia oli hieman otettu ja draamaa hiukan lisätty. Koska en ole kirjaa lukenut, on vaikea sanoa missä suhteessa tapahtumien kuvaus on sama jo kirjassa vai onko muokkaukset tehty vasta elokuvaan, mutta epäilemättä siis tositapahtumien filtteröiminen kahden fiktiivi-kerronnallisen kerroksen läpi vaikuttaa asiaan.

The movie, which was the most watched in Finnish Netflix during its opening week (!!!) is actually based on the novel The Dig (John Preston, 2007), and only through that to the real Sutton Hoo excavations. This might explain why some artistic liberties were taken and some drama was added. Because I have not read the book (yet), I can't really say if the changes in events are already on the book or how much of those have been made to the movie. But it's obvious that filtering real events through two fictional layers is bound to have an effect on the story.

Elokuvassa, varmaan tiivistämisen ja draaman takia, elokuvan kaivaukset aloitetaan suoraan Siitä Nimenomaisesta kummusta, vaikka todellisuudessa tämä oli vasta neljäs tutkittu kumpu ja alueen kaivaukset oli aloitettukin jo edellisenä vuonna. Ensimmäisenä kaivausvuonna, 1938, kaivetut pienemmät kummut olivat vielä olleet aikanaan ryöstettyjä ja sekoitettuja, joten kuvitella voi, että odotukset eivät olleet eritysen korkealla 1939 kaivauksille - vaikka jäljelle jäänyt kumpu olikin suurin alueella. Muussakin suhteessa aikajanaa on typistetty jotta tapahtumat olisi saatu mahdutettua 1939-vuodelle, mutta koitan olla spoilaamatta sen enempää itse elokuvasta.

In the film, perhaps to make it more compact and dramatic, the excavations are started with That Particular Mound, although in reality this mound was only the fourth in the area to be excavated, and even the excavations were started a year before. In the first year of the excavations, 1938, all the smaller excavated mounds had turned out to be plundered in the past, so one can assume that the expectations were not that high during the 1939 excavations - although the remaining mound was the largest of them all. The events were slightly cut and summarised so that all events of the film took place in the year 1939, which historically was incorrect, but I try not to spoil the events of the film.

Itse olen ehkä vähän puolueellinen Ralph Fiennesiä kohtaan, koska ihan lähtökohtaisesti pidän kovin näyttelijästä, mutta olen ehdottomasti sitä mieltä, että Fiennes Sutton Hoon kaivaukset aloittaneena Basil Brownina on erinomainen suoritus. Fiennesin Basil Brown on hiljainen ja hieman jäyhä mies, joka tuntee osaamisensa ja arvonsa. Elokuvaan on kirjoitettu pientä vastakkainasettelua virallisesti arkeologiksi kouluttamattoma Brownin ja viranomaisten välille, mutta National Trust kertoo yhteistyön sujuneen kentällä kuitenkin todellisuudessa aivan hyvässä hengessä. Carey Mulligan kaivausalueen maat omistaneena ja Brownin kaivamaan palkanneena rouva Edith Prettynä on myös hiljainen, mutta tarpeen vaatiessa jämäkkä ja pistää jopa museoviranomaiset ruotuun - tekemättä asiasta sen suurempaa numeroa. Toisaalta Mulliganin Prettyssä on läsnä elokuvan loppua kohden koko ajan selvempi hauraus, josta siitäkin yritetään parhaimpansa mukaan olla tekemättä numeroa.

My opinion of Ralph Fiennes is a bit biased by default as I do enjoy his acting immensely, but none the less I found Fiennes' portrayal of Basil Brown, an self-taught amateur archaeologist hired to start the excavations, very credible. Fiennes' Brown is presented as a quiet and determined, a man who knows his skills and his worth. There is some added drama in the form of confrontation between Brown and museum officials, but National Trust writes that the work in the field was actually carried out in a friendly and co-operative manner. Carey Mulligan in the role of mrs Edith Pretty, widowed landowner of the Sutton Hoo area and the person who hired Brown to excavate, is also quiet, reserved, and, when needed, willful enough to stand her ground against museum officials - without making a fuss out of it. On the other hand, there is an ever growing fragility in Mulligan's Pretty - no fuss about that either.

Jos jostain kritiikkiä on annettava, niin se olisi varmaan elokuvan loppupuolesta, jolloin koko tarinan fokus muuttuu ja mahtavan löydön sijaan keskitytäänkin henkilöihin, jotka ovat siihen asti olleet sivuosassa ja ihmissuhteisiin - ja erityisesti ihmissuhteisiin, joita ei todellisuudessa edes ollut, sillä vaikka ehdottomasti suurin osa elokuvassa esiintyvistä henkilöistä onkin todellisia, jonkin verran takavasemmalta yllättäneen romanssinpoikasen toinen osapuoli oli fiktiivinen. Kaiken lisäksi fiktiivinen henkilö on korvannut kaksi todellista paikalla työskennellyttä naista, jotka dokumentoivat kaivauksia valokuvaamalla, ensimmäistä kertaa värifilmillekin vielä. Eipä sillä, olihan loppukin kerronnallisesti oikein liikuttava, ja niin mainio kuin tämä elokuva onkin, tämä lopun fokuksenmuutos ei sitä niin oleellisesti huononna. The Dig on mielestäni ehdottomasti parasta, mitä historia-teemaisilla elokuvilla on ollut tarjota vuosikausiin.

If I am to critisize something in this film, it would be the latter part of this movie where the whole focus changes from the ship find to members of the excavation crew, who had been all but invisible until then, and their relationships. Notably, relationships that did not even exist in reality, because while the great majority of the individuals portrayed in this movie are based on real people, this sudden romantic couple is fictious by its other half. And if that's not enough, a fictious man replaces here two real women, who documented the excavations by photography, and they were the first ones to use colour photography in archaeology. Not to say that the story isn't touching, because it is, none the less. In fact I think, that The Dig is one of the absolutely best history-themed movies in years!

And now I really want to visit Sutton Hoo.
