Hedebystä ajeltiin lahden toiselle rannalle Schleswigiin kun aikaa vielä oli jonninverran ja tokihan se piti käyttää hyvin -eli museoon.

Gottorfin linnalla on itsessään historiaa, linna sai alkunsa 1100-luvulla piispanlinnana mutta linnan nykyinen rakennus on 1600-1700-lukujen vaihteesta. Nykyisin linnassa pitää majaansa taide- ja kulttuurihistoriallinen museo sekä arkeologinen museo. Kuulosti kivalta toki mutta ehkä ei ihan äärettömän vaikuttavalta noin ilmaisten, itseltäkin meni oikeastaan alkujaan vähän ohi että kyse on kokonaisesta Schleswig-Holsteinin lääninmuseosta ja lääni kattaa mm. Lyypekin hansakaupungin sekä esihistoriallisesti kuuluisimmat uhrisuot.

Eli siis täytyy sanoa että en ihan osannut odottaa kaikkea mitä vastaan tuli, tänne olisi oikeasti pitänyt varata hirveän paljon enemmän aikaa kuin mitä meillä oli ennen paikan sulkeutumista. Koko päivä olisi mennyt heittämällä! Nyt kävi vähän niin, että ei kaikelle mahtavalle osannut oikein eikä pystynyt antamaan asiaankuuluvaa arvoa kun aika oli todella rajallinen -käynti muistutti paikka paikoin lähinnä läpijuoksua. Eli tämä on todella iso paikka. Jos käytte niin varautukaa siihen.

From Hedeby we drove to the other side of the bay, to Schleswig since we still had some time to spend. And of course it had to be spent well, in a museum!

Gottorf castle itself  has quite some history, it started out as a bishop's castle in the 12th century but the building we see now is from the turn on 17th-18th century. Nowadays the building houses the art and cultural history museums and the archaeological museum. Interesting, obviously, but not so totally impressing when it was put like that -I did not really fully realize beforehand that this indeed is the Schleswig-Holstein county museum and the county covers for example the successful medieval hanseatic town Lübeck and the most famous bogs used for offerings in the iron age.

So indeed, the place was way larger and much more wow than I expected. And that meant that we had too little time to spend before the museum was closed for the day, perhaps a whole day would've been sufficient. That sort of meant too that I could not really appreciate all the wonderful things that were on display as much as they should've been appreciated, in places it just felt like we ran through the museum. So there, this is a big place. If you visit this museum, you have been warned.

Aloitettiin potentiaalisesti kiinnostavimmasta eli keskiajan näyttelystä, ja tässä vaiheessa oikeastaan itselleni vasta valkeni missä oikein ollaankaan. Näitä esinekuvia täältä kun on Pinterest väärällään, oranssista taustasta ei voi erehtyä. Esineitä oli esillä ihanan paljon, mutta tieto niistä oli vain saksaksi. Ei pitäisi tässä vaiheessa enää yllättyä... Joka tapauksessa, nämä keskiaikaiset löydöt olivat suurimmalta osalta melko lailla itse itsensä selittäviä ja vaikeammankin tekstin joukosta noukkii sentään vuosiluvut.

We started out with the potentially most interesting exhibition, the medieval times. And this was really the point where I grasped the situation, where I really was now -Pinterest is full of pics of items from this exhibition, the orange background really is unmistakable. There were wonderfully plenty of items on display, but yet again all the information was in German. At this point, I should not have been surprised... But anyway, these medieval items were mostly self-explanatory and even if the text itself is difficult to grasp, dates of the items are fairly easy to figure out from the text.

Keskiajasta selvittiin (iso näyttely!) ja kipitettiin esihistorian osaston läpi. Kivikausinäyttelyyn olisi ollut kiva pystyä tutustumaan enemmän, mutta aika ei antanut myöden. Parin huoneen päässä kun odotti suoranainen fangirl-hetki, esineitä joita on tillottanut pikkukuvista ja rakenteiden viivapiirroksista vuosikausia. Thorsbergin vaatteet!

1860-luvulla tutkitusta suosta löytyneet vaattteet on ajoitettu 300-luvulle, Havaintona oli todettava, että vaikka kuvissakin huomaa että vaatteet ovat hyvin hoikalle ihmiselle, erityisesti housujen kapeus oli melko käsittämätön. Itseeni verraten, kokoa 36 olevana ihmisenä ei kannattaisi yrittääkään, tuossa kokoluokassa näkee yleisesti ottaen lähinnä hoikimpia teinejä. Thorsbergin vaatteethan löydettiin irrallisena, ts. ei ruumista sisällä, joten niiden omistajuus ja alkuperä on vähän kysymysmerkki. Kangas kuitenkin on erittäin hienolaatuista sekä paidassa että housuissa, ja paidan reunan lautanauha on ollut aikoinaan purppuranvärinen!

The medieval exhibition was indeed large, after that we headed back in time and through the prehistorical exhibition. The stone age was something I would have liked to actually stop and look at, but there was really no time. Because in a few rooms distance, there was a fangirl moment about to happen. Items that I had been looking from photos and line drawings time after time -the Thorsberg garments!

The Thorsberg garments were found in a bog excavated in 1860s and they have been dated to the 4th century. It is clear from the photos too but more obvious when actually looking at the garments that they are made for a really skinny person, especially the narrow legs in the trousers are striking. When comparing the size to mine, as a person of size 36 (UK 8) there would've been no way I could fit in those -the size is comparable to what one usually sees among the skinniest teenagers. The garments were found separate, ie. there was no corpse inside them, so their ownership and origin is a bit of an enigma. No doubt about that, the fabric is of very good quality in both trousers and shirt, and the tablet woven band in the edge of the sleeves was originally purple in colour!

Thorsbergin suosta oli paljon muutakin materiaalia, alue oli toiminut satoja vuosia (n. 100 eaa - 500 jaa) esineiden uhrauspaikkana.

Not just garments, there were many other items found in the Thorsberg bog. The area was used for hundreds of years (c. 1st century bce- 500 ce) for offering.

Alueella kivikauden lopulta rautakaudelle uhrattiin suohon muutakin kuin vaatteita ja sekalaista muuta esineistöä -Schleswig-Holsteinin alueelta on löytynyt myös lukuisia suoruumiita. Suoruumiille olikin omistettu kokonaan oma huoneensa. Varsin hämäränä tilana kuvaaminen oli siellä varsin hankalaa ja vitriinit heijastavaisia, joten kuvallinen todistusaineisto jäi heikonlaiseksi. Paikalla olivat kuitenkin mm. Damendorfin mies vaatteineen, Dätgenin mies (äärettömän komea hiuslaite!) ja Windebyn poika.

From the late stone age all the way to the iron age, not just garments and misc. items were offered in the bogs -from Schleswig-Holstein area several bog bodies have been found. In the museum they had a room of their own. As it was very dim in there and glass cases were reflecting, the quality of most photos I took was quite poor. Anyway, present in the exhibition were (among others) the Damendorf man and his garments, Dätgen man with his impressive hairdo and Windeby boy.

Olisiko Damendorfin mies näyttänyt tältä? Housut ja kengät on ainakin ovat löydön mukaiset. ~~~ Perhaps Damendorf man looked like this? At least the trousers and shoes match the find.

Nydamin laiva oli sijoitettu erilliseen rakennukseensa. 320-luvulle jaa ajoitettu 23 metriä pitkä 15 airoparin laiva esineistöineen löytyi sekin suosta 1850-60-luvun vaihteessa. Laivoja oli alkujaan ollut kaksi mutta toinen, pienempi niistä (19-metrinen, ei ihan pieni sekään) tuhoutui sodassa 1864. Tämä säilynyt laiva on tamminen, tuhoutunut kaverinsa oli (epätyypillisesti?) mäntyä. Nydamin laivan yhteydessä löydetstä esineistöstä osa on Tanskan kansallismuseossa, ja laiva itse siis täällä Saksan puolella. Täällä ehdittiin piipahtaa vain turhan pikaiseltaan kun museo meni kiinni, laivaa olisi ihastellut vähän pidempäänkin kuin mihin nyt oli mahdollisuus. Ehkä toiste, paremmalla ajalla. Nähtävää ainakin jäi seuraavallekin kerralle.

Nydam boat was located in a separate hall. Dating to the 320s ce, the 23 meters long ship with 15 pairs of oars was found in a bog in the turn of 1850s-60s along with many other items. Originally there were two ships, but the smaller one (19 meters in length, not really that small) was destroyed during a war in 1864. This preserved ship is made of oak, the other one was made of pine (untypical?). Some of the items found in the Nydam bog with the ship are now in the Danish national museum, but the ship itself is (obviously) here in Germany. We had a really brief visit in this hall, the museum was about to close -the ship would've been worth a longer stay! But perhaps another time, and with more time. At least there is a lot to see, stuff that we didn't have time to check out!
