Koivunkuoripuretusta, osa 2 ~~~ Mordanting with birch bark, part 2

Koivunkuoriliemi lankoineen sai rauhassa kököttää kylpyhuoneen nurkassa, normaalissa huoneenlämmössä, kaksi kuukautta, ja suurimman osan siitä aivan huomaamattomana! Lisäsin pienen tilkan lipeää liemeen, ja liemi ei edes kerännyt hometta. Ainoa haitta oli kun kuori-lankalitkua piti silloin tällöin möyhiä, ilmoille löyhähtävä odööri ei varsinaisesti tuoksunut kukkasilta... Muuten, kun sen antoi olla rauhassa eipä se kyllä haissutkaan juuri miltään.

Birch bark mordanting bath sitted in my bathroom corner, normal room temperature for two months, and most of the time it was almost unnoticeable! I added little lye to the water, and no mold started growing. Only occasionally, when the bath needed some stirring, the true smell of the bath was unleashed (and it certainly wasn't the smell of flowers).. Otherwise, when the bath was left to stand alone, the smell was barely noticeable.

Langat tulivat liemestä hyvin vaalean ruskeina, ja suurin homma oli oikeastaan noukkia lankojen joukosta kuorenpalat pois.Tehtävä helpottui huomattavasti kun antoi lankojen kuivua ensin, sen jälkeen kuorenpalat lähtivät suurimmaksi osaksi lähinnä ravistelemalla. Annoin lankojen kuivua välissä ennen uudelleenvärjäystä.

The yarn ended up as very light beige, and the only thing that was left to to was to get rid of the tree bark pieces that were tangled in the yarn. Once I let the yard dry, it became much easier -by only shaking the skeins, most of the bark bits were on the floor! I let the yarn dry completely before dyeing it again.

Liemi, jossa puretusta testattiin, oli kerran keitettyjen, jääkaapissa säilytettyjen krapinjuurten palojen toinen keittokerta. Tanniinipuretetun 100 g testivyyhdin kaverina siellä oli alunalla esipuretettu 100 g vyyhti samaa lankaa. Langat olivat kuumassa liemessä noin tunnin, sen jälkeen ne saivat jäähdytellä yön yli. Huuhtelin langat seuraavana aamuna. Ei kovin yllättävää, että valmiiksi aavistuksen rusehtava lanka sai lämpimämmän värin, mutta pidän väristä kyllä kovasti. Jäljellä on vielä testivyyhtejä, haluaisin kovin koittaa tanniinipuretettuja myös kylmävärissä. Kevään mittaan ihan varmasti!

The dyebath in which I tested the dye was madder roots, which I had already boiled once before. With the tannin mordanted skein, I dyed another 100 g skein of the same yarn premordanted with alum. The dyebath was heated to the point of almost boiling and it stayed that way for an hour. They were left to cool in the dyebath overnight, I rinsed them on the next day. No big surprise, that a skein which already is coloured light brown ends up as slightly warmer red, but I really like the colour. I'd really like to test tannin mordanted yarn in cold dye bath too. This'll surely happen during this spring!
