Kaiken ulkomaanreissaamisen keskellä tuli käytyä tutustumassa myös lähiseudun historiaan, ja nättinä kesäisenä päivänä tutustuttiin porukalla Varsinais-Suomen Kaarinan ja Paimion seudun linnavuoriin!
Mukana oli tietysti opaskirja, tuoretta tavaraa vuodelta 1891 (jos toki uusintapainos). Ihan mielenkiintoista oli katsella mitä noista linnavuorista silloin oli kerrottu, joskin tietysti tietämys on kasvanut siitä ja tutkittu tietoa on nykyisin paljon enemmän -ja joissain tapauksissa päinvastoin myös, mitä aikoinaan oli kirjattu ylös vahvana oletuksena oli saattanut osoittautua paikkansapitämättömäksi. Kivaa silti, ja onhan näitä wanhojen opaskirjojen kanssa tehtyjä kierroksia tehty ennenkin mm. 1920-luvun kirjan kanssa Turun Tuomiokirkossa. Asiantasaisempaa tietoa kohteista löytyy mm. Kulttuuriympäristön palveluikkunasta Arkeologisista kohteista, hakukriteereinä puolustusvarustukset, tyypin tarkenteena linnavuoret.
In the middle of all the travelling abroad we also decided to familiarize ourselves with history and ancient monuments closer to home. Therefore, on a pretty summery day we took off to see the hillforts in Finland Proper, in Kaarina and Paimio area!
Of course we had a guidebook with us, fresh information from 1891 (although this one was a reprint). It was quite interesting to see what had been said about these hillforts over a hundred years ago -certainly with a pinch of salt because a lot of information has been gained ever since and vice versa, some of the information has also been proven to be not correct. But it was fun anyway, we've done such trips with ancient guidebooks before -for example visited the Turku Cathedral with a guidebook from the 1920s. More up-to-date info is available (but only in Finnish) from the National Bureau on Antiquities website, the ancient monuments database.

Piikkiö Huttala
Huttalan linnavuoren kerrotaan Kulttuuriympäristön palveluikkunan mukaan oleen käytässä jo esiroomalaisella rautakaudella, mahdollisesti pronssikaudellakin jo, alempaa rinteestä no löydetty jäänteitä rautakauden asutuksestakin. Alueella on kuulemma myös lukuisia muinaisesta asutuksesta kertovia kasveja, niitä nyt ei tosin löytynyt. Huttalasta on edelleen mukava näkymä merelle Piikkiönlahdelle, aiemmin näkymä lienee ollut vielä parempi.
The Huttala hillfort has been said to have been first used in the pre-roman iron age, perhaps going back as far as the bronze age. There are some traces of iron age houses nearby too, right by the hill. Also there are several plants that usually tell of human influence in the area, but I didn't find any of those this time. From Huttala there is a pretty view to the sea even nowadays, back in the day I assume it had been even clearer.

Rekottilahan on tunnettu Varsinais-Suomen toisen kalliomaalauksen sijaintipaikkana. Ja tämä punamultaläiskä löydettiinkin, yläpuolellaan varmaankin paikan valintaan vaikuttanut maasälpäkide joka näytti melkoisen paljon kiukkuiselta ukolta jos sitä niin halusi katsoa. Itse puolustusvarustus löytyi hiukan ylärinteeseen maalauksesta, vallia ei löydetty kuin kalliomaalauksen puoleisesta rinteestä. Mäellä oli myös oma lähde, joka iloisesti lasketti vettä pienenä purona rinnettä alas. Puolustusvarustuksesta jonkin verran sivuun on myös kolme suunnilleen ehjää pronssikautista hautaröykkiötä ja jäänteet vielä muutamasta hajoitetusta.

A slightly obscure splash of red ochre was relatively easy to spot, and right on top of it, sitting firmly on the rock, a piece of feldspar which reminded me of a grumpy man -could it have been the reason the location for the painting was chosen, who knows? The actual fortifications were slightly higher still, we found the wall remains only in the rock painting's side of the hill. In the hill there was a spring too, one could think of it as an advantage for the place. Also quite close there were three more or less intact bronze age burial cairns and remains of two more, but they were in remarkably worse condition.

Paimio Vakkavuori
Ei varsinainen linnavuori sinänsä (ei edes Appelgrenin mukaan), mutta olipa kivasti Hevonpään laavun vieressä -pidettiin siellä välipalatauko, kiva ja hyvin ylläpidetty tuo laavu- ja pronssikautinen röykkiökin sieltäkin löytyi. Röykkiöt ovat muuten varsin yleisiä muutenkin noilla nurkilla... Näköalaa piisasi täältäkin merelle saakka! Ennen laavua oli mukavan tunnelmallista metsäpolkua, tästä tuli ihan tunnelma että täällä olisi kiva käydä sienestämässä tai marjassa sitten kun olosuhteet ovat muuten siihen otolliset.
Not a hillfort per se, not even according to Appelgren, but situated nicely by the Hevonpää lean-to where we had our lunchbreak. And I can really recommend the place, neat and well maintained -and also very close to a bronze age cairn! The cairns are plenty on that neighbourhood, by the way... And in here too the scenery was nothing short of wonderful, all the way to the sea! Before arriving to the lean-to there was a forest path, I got me thinking that it could be a very nice place for berry-picking or mushrooming.

Päivän viimeinen kohde oli valtavan kokoinen laitos kaikkineen, ja vielä komeasti käytännössä kokonaan kivivallin ympäröimä. Paikoitellen vallia oli jäljellä aika korkeastikin, erityisesti kun otti huomioon miten valtavista murikoista se oli paikoitellen kasattu. Toisaalta materiaalia ei varmaankaan ollut tarvinnut hakea kaukaa, mäki oli edelleen varsin kivinen... Kaikkineen kiva kohde, vaikka todettava olikin että lähestyttiin mäkeä ihan väärästä suunnasta ja todennäköisesti kaikkein hankalimmasta rinteestä käsin.
The last target for the day, and it was certainly a sizable one -and practically surrounded by a stone wall. In places the wall was still quite tall, especially considering on how large stones were used in building it. On the other hand, it seems that there had been no need to go far for fetching the building material, the terrain was quite rocky still. All in all, a nice place, even though it seems that we approached the hill from a totally wrong direction, from what might just be the most inaccessible side of the hill.
