Tuli tehtyä tuttavan kanssa heitetyn vitsin innoittamana Instagramiin historiadokumentti-joulukalenteri! Instagram on varsin hankala linkkien kanssa, eli tässäpä koottuna kalenteri kokonaisuudessaan. Paljon katsottavaa, koska, no, eipä tällä hetkellä kovinkaan paljoa muutakaan tekemistä ole. Mutta senkin ajan voi tietysti käyttää hyvin!

In late November I joked with my friend about extensive history documentary watching and there it came to me, the idea of history documentary advent calendar. I posted it on Instagram, but since IG is not great with links, here it is in whole. A lot to watch, but right now there is not that much else to do, either. But one can put that time to good use!

1.12. Secret Scotland with Susan Calman
December 1st is for Secret Scotland with Susan Calman. Not all history, but a really, really lot of it. Three seasons of -as one might expect- impressive and interesting places all over Scotland. And since I started watching this (haven't even seen all episodes yet) I've become such a Susan Calman fan, she's nothing short of awesome -funny in a nice, warm way. Heck, I've never visited Scotland but now I immensely want to!
2.12. A Stitch in time
Joulukuun toinen päivä ja A Stitch in time. BBC:n kuusiosainen sarja parin vuoden takaa (2018), kokonaisuudessaan omistettu historiallisille tekstiileille ja niiden ennallistamiselle (nyt on tekstiilinörtti tyytyväinen, koko sarjan verran herkkuja!). Ennallistettavat vaatteet ajoittuvat 1300-luvulta 1700-luvulle, enimmäkseen taiteesta noukittuja esimerkkejä - mutta onpahan siellä joukossa myös 1300-luvun säilynyt Edwardin, mustan prinssin, asetakki. Ilahduttavan perusteellista paneutumista myös vaatteiden viestimiin asioihin ja symboliikkaan ennallistuksissa oleellisten materiaalien ja tekniikoiden lisäksi. Yhdistelmänä Ninya Mikhailan vaatehistoriantuntemus ja Amber Butchardin muotitietämys on mainio!
December 2 is for A stitch in time. This six part BBC series originally aired in 2018, and it's all about recreating historical garments (I still can't believe how awesome it is, to make an entire series on this subject!). The garments in question are ranging from the 14th century to the 18th century, mostly garments seen in art - and then there is the 14th century jupon of Edward, the Black prince! The series goes quite deep to the matters of symbolism in clothing and the actual techniques used in them. Ninya Mikhaila's expertise in historical clothing and Amber Butchard's fashion knowledge are a really delightful combination. Go watch :)
3.12. Meet the Romans with Mary Beard
Meet the Romans on kolmesainen sarja. Roomahan on tietysti erityisen tunnettu massiivisista rakennuskomplekseistaan ja keisareista ja muista rikkaista valtaapitävistä, mutta ilahduttavasti tämä sarja keskittyy tavallisiin ihmisiin. Professori Mary Beard on dokumentin juontajana vallan mainio!
December 3rd! Meet the Romans with Mary Beard is a three-part series, originally aired in 2013. Ancient Rome, of course, is known for its emperors and large buildings, but this series focuses on people - ordinary people, not just the influental and rich. And prof. Mary Beard really is just splendid!
4.12. History of Ancient Britain
History of Ancient Britain on jo yhden tavan klassikko. Arkeologi Neil Oliverin juontama sarja alkaa jääkaudesta, ja neljän jakson aikana edetään Rooman ajan alkuun asti. BBC:n laatua ja kivasti myös hieman kokeellista arkeologiaa. Mutta jos ihan totta puhutaan, kaikkein parasta saattaa silti olla Neil Oliverin murre.
December 4th! A classic indeed, BBC's 2011 series History of Ancient Britain with Neil Oliver starts from the ice age and with its four episodes, it stops where Roman Britain starts. BBC quality documentary and some experimental archaeology too, which is always super nice, but to be totally honest, the best part of this series might just be Neil Oliver's dialect.
5.12. The Celts
Hiukan yllätti, että joulukuun viidennen The Celts oli jo melkein 20-vuotias sarja (2001), niin hyvältä se edelleen näyttää. Kelttejähän jo eilisen sarjassa sivuttiin, mutta nyt mennään sitten aiheeseen hyvin perusteellisesti. Erityisen paljon tykkäsin ensimmäisestä jaksosta, jossa pyöritään Hallstattin seuduilla. Äärettömän hienoja esineitä ja mainioita maisemiakin tässä sarjassa.
December 5th! I was quite surprised to find that this series, The Celts, was made already in 2001, because it still looks quite fresh. The subject of the Celts was briefly touched in yesterday's series, but this series covers the subject much more thoroughly. I especially liked the first part, Hallstatt and all that. Very much eye candy here!
6.12. The 1940s house
Itsenäisyyspäivän kunniaksi yritin löytää suomalaisen sarjan tähän, mutta Youtube tarjosi lähinnä eioota. No, aasinsiltaa pitkin sitten tämän päivän dokumenttiin, onhan suomalaisen itsenäisyyspäivän vietto ollut kovin keskittynyttä toiseen maailmansotaan, joten siitä tämän päivän sarjakin. Sotadokumentit eivät itselleni oikein toimi, mutta tämän aihe, elämä kotirintamalla sodan aikaan, onkin sitten jotain aivan muuta. The 1940's house:ssa otetaan nykypäivän tavallisehko perhe, joka laitetaan elämään kaupunkielämää toisen maailmansodan olosuhteissa, ikkunoiden pimennyksineen ja säännöstelyineen päivineen, ohjastamassa aikakauden elämään on ryhmä asiantuntijoita. Kaikkineen mielenkiintoinen aihe - miten pyrkimys tavalliseen arkeen ilmenee hyvin epätavallisissa olosuhteissa.
December 6th! I was really trying to find a Finnish documentary (Finnish independence day), but there seems to be none on YouTube. So, for the second best option. As Finnish independence day focuses really, really heavily on surviving WWII, so does The 1940s house. More like reality series, an ordinary-ish family lives their life in wartime British town -blackouts, rationings and all that, all with expert guidance. I'm not a fan of war documents, but this one was interesting -going on with the ordinary life as well as one can.
7.12. Walking through history
Joulukuun seitsemäs, ja nyt vasta päästään Tony Robinsoniin! Hieman mietitytti miten monta herran juontamaa sarjaa voi yhteen listaan lisätä, mutta tässä siis ensimmäinenkin. Walking through history esittää brittiläistä luontoa ja maaseutua, alueellisia tyypillisyyksiä useilta historian jaksoilta kävelyreittien varrelta. Komeata katsottavaa!
December 7th! Tony Robinson. Oh dear. How many of his series can I fit into this list? Anyway, here's Walking through history, and plenty of lovely rural British langscapes and interesting regional characteristics here, from all phases of history. Eye candy, absolutely!
8.12. History's biggest fibs
Tietysti piti Lucy Worsleykin mahduttaa mukaan (ja lisää tulee myöhemmin listassa!). Worsleylla on vaikuttava ura historian parissa, mutta samaan hän on aikaan erittäin etevä kertomaan tarinoita historiasta - ja tarinoistahan on tässä dokumentissa juurikin kyse! Hieno näkökulma siihen, miten historia on ennen kaikkea niin kuin se kerrotaan, ja hyvä kertomus on ihan yhtä tärkeää kuin se, mitä oikeasti tapahtui.
December 8th! Of course Lucy Worsley had to be included! Her career as a historian is impressive, and she is just a great storyteller as well. Therefore I think it's just good and proper that she has presented quite a few history documentaries. In this one, History's biggest fibs, I like the general idea of how history is largely made of stories as well, and how a story is told is equally important as what happened.
9.12. Tales from the green valley
Tales from the Green Valley oli ilmestyessään melkoisen erikoinen ja ennen näkemätön konsepti - ja ehdottoman positiivisella tavalla. Tässä sarjassa ryhmä historian ammattilaisia pyörittää 1600-luvun alun maatilaa vuoden ajan aikakauden menetelmillä ja tekniikoilla - äärettömän opettavaista ja elävän historian ystävälle ihan parasta mahdollista katsottavaa. Itse olen katsonut tämän useampaan kertaan, ja joka kerta iskee tietty "mää kans" -mieliteko avotulikokkauksesta sikolätin rakentamiseen. No niin, nyt on varoitettu :D
December 9th! When it comes to living history in documentaries, Tales from the green valley was something not quite seen before. A team of history professionals run an early 17th century farm for a year, from autumn to autumn using period techniques and equipment. Extremely educational, and a real treat for a living history geek - so much to learn! I've watched this several times, and after each time I be all like "I want to build a pigsty and a hedge!". You have been warned :D
10.12. Dark ages, the age of light
Siinä missä eilisen sarja oli äärettömän käytännöllinen, tämän päivän sarja on tyyliltään enemmänkin perinteinen dokumentti. Dark ages - termille ei oikein vakiintunutta, hyvää suomalaista käännöstä oikein ole, mutta tämä sarja keskittyy varhaiskeskiajan ympärille, 300-1000-luvuille, erityisesti keskittyen aikakauden taiteeseen. Eli paljon nättejä esineitä! Kiva sarja, vaikka hieman soraääniä onkin kuultu liittyen ensimmäisessä jaksossa esitettyihin teorioihin.
December 10th! Where as yesterday's series was very hands-on, today's Dark ages, the age of light is more like a classical documentary on style. It dives deep into the dark ages (4th to 11th century) especially focusing on art of the era. So lots of pretty things here! Some slight protests have been heard due to some theories in the first episode, but good none the less.
11.12. Bone detectives
Luut voivat kertoa ihmisestä varsin paljon! Vaikka tämän päivän sarja onkin paikoitellen vähän, no, epämiellyttävä (ja ihmisjäänteiden kanssahan siinä nimen omaan tehdään töitä), se on myös melkoisen opettavainen mitä tulee osteologiaan ja ihmisjäänteiden arkeologiaan. Jotenkin ilahduttavaa, miten tässä tuodaan esille tavallisten, historian unohtamien ihmisten elämäntarinoita - niiden, joista ei kirjallisia lähteitä jäänyt. Ja kakkoskaudella ruutuun pääsee Raksha Dave, olen tykännyt kovin jo Time Teamin ajoista!
December 11th! Bones can tell so much about a person! Although a bit gruesome at times, Bone detectives is a super fascinating trip to the world of burials and osteology and the archaeology of human remains -but more than that, the life stories of those individuals, real people without written records. And there's Raksha Dave in season two, I have been a fan since her appearances in Time team.

December 12th! If walls could talk is, to cut it short, history of home, room by room. From the medieval times to today, it explores how rooms themselves have changed, and how the activities carried out in those rooms have changed as well. Another Lucy Worsley documentary series in this list, by the way!
13.12. The truth about christmas carols
Joululaulujen historia oli vähän tuntemattomampaa alaa itselleni, joten tässä tulikin aika paljon uutta tietoa (joskin tietysti painottuen BBC:n kyseessä ollessa englantilaisiin carol'eihin). Paljon monipuolisempi tausta kuin olisi voinut kuvitellakaan! Tämä taisi myös olla listan ensimmäinen yksittäinen dokumentti, ts. ei osa sarjaa :)
December 13th! The truth about christmas carols, a BBC documentary. Really some new information, at least for me! Carols, of course, are an essential part of christmas, and the history of carols is more complicated than one might think. This documentary also seems to be the first single (ei. not a part of a series) in this list :)

Let's cook history on, kuten nimestä voisi päätelläkin, ruokahistorian sarja. Liikkeelle lähdetään antiikin Roomasta, ja sarja kattaa ajan 1800-luvulle saakka. Ajanjakso pitää sisällään melkoisen paljon yhteiskunnallisia muutoksia, eikä ruokakaan ole yhteiskunnasta irrallaan - sekin ilmaisee yhteiskunnallista asemaa ja kertoo esimerkiksi kontakteista.
December 15th! Let's cook history is, obviously, a food history documentary series. Starting from the Roman era and going all the way to the 19th century, the timespan covers quite significant changes in society. And food is, after all, so much more than just something to keep hunger away - it tells stories of contacts and status, for example.
16.12. 12 days of Tudor christmas
Varsin viehättävä katsaus siihen, miten joulua vietettiin 500 vuotta sitten. Ja siihenhän liittyy paitsi tuttuja perinteitä, myös paljon piirteitä jotka ovat nykyjoulussa vieraita. Ennallistukset ovat mielestäni aina tosi viehättäviä, ja tässähän on sitten uudelleenluotuna kokonainen 1500-luvun joulujuhla pitopöytineen. Ja juontajana Lucy Worsley! harmi vaan, että tämä näemmä poistettiin Youtubesta kokonaan heti soittolistan kokoamisen jälkeen, mutta jos tämä tulee jossain vastaan, kannattaa katsoa!
December 16th! Lucy Worsley's 12 days of Tudor christmas is really a lovely look on how christmas was celebrated 500 years ago. A lot of unfamiliar features, but also something we do know! I for one am a big fan of recreated things - and here we have a whole Tudor christmas feast. And, of course, there's Lucy Worsley. Unfortunately this documentary was apparently completely removed from YouTube right after I made this playlist, but should you come across it, do watch!

Dan Snow's Norman walks toimii aika tavalla samoilla periaatteilla kuin muutaman päivän takainen Tony Robinsonin Walking through history, mutta tässä käsitellään huomattavasti rajatumpaa aikajanaa. Mutta erinomaisen kauniita maisemia ja muutenkin hienoja kohteita tässäkin!
December 17th! Dan Snow's Norman walks has pretty much the same theme as previous Tony Robinson's walking through history, but a lot narrower time span - the Norman era. But a lot of really awesome langscapes and other eye candy in here as well!

History cold case'lla on aika paljon yhtäläisyyksiä aiemman Bone detectives'in kanssa. Sarjassa tutkitaan arkeologisia ihmisjäänteitä nykyisen rikostutkinnan keinoin, ja selvitetään faktoja vainajan elämästä, elinolosuhteista ja kuolemasta. Joka vainajasta tehdään myös kasvorekonstruktio, tykkään niistä kovin. Tuovat kertaheitolla menneisyyden ihmisen "oikeammaksi" ja samaistuttavammaksi.
December 18th! History cold case series has similarities to Bone detectives, hinted earlier. In this series archaeological human remains are being examined using forensic methods, and the team finds out about their life and living conditions as well as their death. Every person examined also gets a facial reconstruction. I love those, they make a long since deceaesed person much more relatable and sort of alive.
19.12. Victorian farm
December 19th! Victorian farm has the very same lovely team that already gave us Tales from the green valley. The concept is similar too -to run a farm like they used to, this time in the year 1880. An interesting era, something old and something very new!
20.12. Secrets of the stone age
Secrets of the stone age on kaksiosainen sarja. Koitin etsiä tälle päivälle dokkaria tai -sarjaa joka ei olisi brittiläinen tai kertoisi Britanniasta (ei sillä että niissä vikaa olisi, ovatpa vain tässä listassa varsin hyvin edustettuina). Ja hyvä löytyikin, tämä saksalainen sarja kattaa maantieteellisesti alueen Turkista Tanskaan. Hienoja maisemia, mielenkiintoisia kohteita ja kivasti muinaistekniikkaakin!
Secrets of the stone age is the two-part series for today. I was looking for a documentary or -series not focusing on Britain and preferably about prehistory (not that there's anything wrong with Britain but it's been quite well presented). And I found a treat! A German series spanning geographically from Turkey to Denmark, beautiful landscapes, interesting sites and quite a lot of ancient technology, too!

Today's documentary is The Viking sagas. Digging deep to the viking sagas and the culture they were born in, this documentary focuses especially on the Laxdaela saga. Parts of this documentary were even shot in the actual place where the events happened! Iceland is just <3

Tämän päivän dokumentti keskittyy kuninkaallisiin makuuhuoneisiin. Huonetiloja, niissä tehtäviä toimintoja ja yksityisyyden käsitettä käsiteltiin jo muutama päivä sitten, mutta kuninkaallisten huoneethan ovat sitten aivan tapaus erikseen! Dokumentti käsittelee sekä sängyt, nukkujat että sen, mitä kaikkea muuta menneisyyden kuninkaallisissa makuuhuoneissa tapahtui.
23.12. Secrets of the castle
Ehdottomasti parhaat viimeiseksi! Secrets of the castle on vaan mahdottoman hieno kokonaisuus. Guedelonin linna, jota rakennetaan Ranskassa keskiaikaisin menetelmin, ja tekijätiiminä sama ryhmä johon jo Tales from the Green Valley'ssa tutustuttiin. Eli luvassa taas menneisyyden arkea (tässä tapauksessa 1200-lukua) ja työmenetelmiä, kivenhakkaamisesta leipomiseen. Erittäin inspiroiva sarja!
Saving the absolute best two for last! Secrets of the castle, what's not to love? Guedelon castle (a building site where a castle is being constructed using medieval methods only), the team who brought us Tales from the green valley and detailed snapshots of everyday life and work needed in the castle building site, from baking to masonry. Truly inspiring!
24.12. A Tudor feast at christmas
Viimeinen listan dokumentti on A Tudor feast. Ja sama historian ammattilais-tiimi kuin eilenkin, tällä kertaa 1500-luvulla. Alun perin tosin ajattelin tähän paikalle Tudor Monastery Farm -sarjaa, joka ihan heittämällä on kyllä ollut itselleni vaikuttavin ja inspiroivin, mutta no, jouluaatto ja tämähän on samaa jatkumoa (ja siitä näemmä puuttuu ensimmäinen jakso Youtubesta tällä hetkellä kokonaan). Mutta tämähän on siis äärettömän hienoa katsottavaa tämäkin. Periaatteetkin ovat samoja, ammattilaistiimi ennallistaa menneisyyden elämää ja ympäristökin on superhieno!
The last documentary in this advent calendar is A tudor feast. This is by the same team of experts as yesterday's Secrets of the castle, this time set in the 16th century. I was really thinking of placing Tudor monastery farm as the documentary for this day, as it has definitely been the series that has impressed and influenced me most, but well, christmas and all (and episode 1 of Tudor monastery farm doesn't seem to be on YouTube atm). But this is nothing short of awesome as well -you know the drill: history experts recreating past life hands on in a super beautiful setting!
