Muutama viikko sitten tuli eteen mahtava mahdollisuus käydä tekemässä arkeologista pintapoimintaa Laukon kartanon mailla Vesilahdessa. Kartanon takaiset pellot kun oli juuri kynnetty, ja mitä maan alla sitten olikaan ollut oli taas vaihtanut asentoa pulpahtaen osin maan pinnallekin. Viljelykäytössä nämä pellot toki olivat olleet satoja vuosia ja kynnetty uudelleen vuosi toisensa jälkeen, joten muinaisjäännöksellä ei tietysti käyty koukkimassa - varsin lähellä sellaisia kuitenkin, ja tämähän teki asiasta entistä mielenkiintoisempaa! Muuta esineistöä peltoon olisi voinut päätyä esimerkiksi kompostin mukana, kaikki löydettävä siis kuitenkin kertoisi elämästä alueella.
Laukon alueellahan asutusta ja elämää on ollut viimeisen kahden tuhannen vuoden ajan ja jäänteitä siitä on myös runsain määrin. Alue kuitenkin oli saanut olla rauhassa tehorakentamiselta, joten erilaiset menneen elämän piirteet ovat säilyneet mainiosti.
A few weeks ago I got a super interesting chance to do archaeological fieldwalking in Laukko manor, Vesilahti. The fields behind the manor had recently been ploughed, and whatever there had been underground had partially come to the surface again. These fields had, of course, been cultivated for hundreds of years and they had therefore been ploughed again and again, so certainly we were not about to rob an excisting archeological feature. However, we were quite close to known ancient monuments, this made the whole thing even more interesting! Other possibilities for items ending up in a field might be, for example, with compost - all in all, whatever there was to be found would tell something about the past life in the area.
Laukko area has been inhabited for at least two thousand years and there are a lot of features in the landscape made by generations long gone. As the area has been quite sparsely built and continues to be, the ancient monuments have been left in peace and are well preserved.

Pintapoiminta tekniikkana perustuu siihen, että systemaattisesti poimitaan maan pinnalla olevat esineet talteen. Maanpinnan alla olevia ei siis mennä tässä kaivamaan. Pellot ovat varmaankin helpoin pintapoimintakohde, mutta samaa tekniikkaa voi soveltaa vaikkapa metsäkoneen mylläämään metsänpohjaan.
Varsin mukavan pienellä kuuden hengen porukalla (kaksi ammattiarkeologia, kaksi opiskelijaa ja kaksi pitkän linjan historianystävää) istuttiin alas ja tutkittiin alueen kartasta peltoja, jotka olisivat tarkoitukseen potentiaalisimpia. Kartanon isäntä (joka meidät oli kutsunut paikalle) oli innolla mukana ja osoitteli alueita, joista hänen kokemuksensa ja toki erinomaisen kattavan paikan historian tuntemuksensakin mukaan kannatti tutkia.
Fieldwalking as a technique is based on systematically looking for the items that are on the ground surface. So no digging for items that are underground! Fields are (as the name says) the easiest place to do fieldwalking, but the same method could be applied to, for example, forest floor that has been broken by forest machinery.
First when we arrived we sat down (there was six of us, two professional archaeologists, two students and two long-term history enthusiasts) and we looked at the maps for areas that would be potential places to start our fieldwalking. The another manor owner (who actually invited us) was enthusiastically participating and pointed areas that would be of interest according to his experience and extensive knowledge of the manor history.

Sää oli oikein klassisen keväisen epävakainen, välillä paistoi niin että takki tuntui olevan liikaa, toisena hetkenä niskaan ropsahti sadekuuro. Sen yllättäessä pidettiin tauko kartanon sisätiloissa ja tutustuttiin materiaaliin, joka oli kartanon alueelta löytynyt aikoinaan kunnon kaivauksia tehdessä mutta jota Museovirasto ei ollut kokoelmiinsa halunnut. Sitä olikin, pottikaakeleista kampaan! Museovirasto oli myös myöntänyt luvan, että kartano sai säilyttää ja pitää esillä tiettyjä esineitä jotka virallisesti kuuluivat Museoviraston omiin kokoelmiin.
The weather was somewhat unstable as is typical for Finnish spring. At moments it was so warm that a jacket was too much, and soon after there was rain. When the rain came, we took a break and visited the manor, familiarizing ourselves with the archaeological material that had been found in the manor area when proper excavations were carried out but for which the National Bureau of Antiquities expressed no interest. There were all kinds from items, from combs to stove tile fragments! Also there were some items that in fact were a part of the NBA collections, but were kept and exhibited in Laukko where they had been found.

Kun sää vähän selkeni, palattiin ulkoilmaan. Pikainen kierros rannassa komeiden näkymien kera ja olihan paikalla myös rakennuksen pohjia joita varsiaisesti tultiin sinne katsomaan - ne sijaitsivat aivan muutaman metri vesirajasta. Mitä rakennuksia ne olivat olleet, siitä ei ollut tietoa. Ainakaan vielä.
When the rain was over we went back outside. Before returning to fieldwalking we took a walk to see some nice lakeside scenery and remains of buildings that had stood right by the shoreline. What buildings they had been remains unknown, at least for now.

Paluu pellolle ja pintapoiminta jatkui! Tällä osuudella saatiin enemmän löytöjä, jopa se viikinkiaikainen lasihelmi joka huumorimielellä tilattiin löydettäväksi ennen aloittamista. Oli muuten oma löytöni! Pieni, kirkkaansininen lasihelmi erottui oikein huutomerkillä tasaisen ruskeanharmaasta maasta. Toisaalla kartanon isäntä kävi pellon kaukaisempaa osaa läpi metallinetsimellä, ja sieltä nousikin toinen esine josta aloittaessa oli ollut puhetta, karhunhammasriipus ja vielä oikein hyvässä kunnossa. Sikälikin harvinainen löytö että eivät ole oikein tyypillisiä näille seuduille, enemmänkin lounais-suomalainen esinetyyppi. Kolmas "tilattu" vaan jäi kadoksiin, keskiaikaan viittaavaa materiaalia ei saatu löydettyä. Suurin osa esineistöstä oli kuitenkin hyvin arkista ja vähemmän näyttävää, harmillisesti ei tullut kuvia valtavan suurista, yli 20 cm pitkistä rautanauloista joita noukki lähes jokainen poimija.
Then we returned to the field and fieldwalking. This tilme we got more finds, even the viking age glass bead which we ordered before before starting as a joke. And it was spotted by yours truly! Small, bright blue glass bead clearly stood out against the brown-grey earth. In another part of the field the manor owner examined the field with a metal detector and came back with another item that was mentioned before starting, a bronze bear tooth pendant in very good condition. A rare find, because bear tooth pendants tend to be more of a SW Finland -thing. We only lacked the medieval finds which we spoke of, nothing especially pointing to the medieval period was found. Most of the finds were very ordinary and much less spiffy. Unfortunately I have no photos of the huge iron nails that were quite abundant, pretty much everyone found a nail that was over 20 cm long.
Kaikkineen kolmen pellon alueella tutkittiin, mutta kaksi jälkimmäistä osoittautuivat huomattavasti vähälöytöisemmiksi kuin tämä ensimmäinen. Päädyttiin siis katselemaan alueen muinaisjäännöksiä, joita todella alueella on runsain määrin ja hienoissa maisemissa. Ja uusia tuntuu löytyvän aina vähän väliä.
Three fields were walked altogether (all of them only partially, though), the two other fields ended up having much less items for us to find than the first one. So we switched to look at the ancient monuments and archaeological sites, which are plenty in Laukko - and all of them are situated in really lovely surroundings. Even new ones seem to pop up every now and then.

Lopulta olikin aika pakata auto ja lähteä kotiin, johan sitä pitkä päivä tulikin tehtyä. Mutta sanottava on, että ensimmäinen kokemus pintapoiminnasta oli kyllä oikein mukava, ja mieluusti osallistun toisenkin kerran jos vain mahdollisuus on!
Then it was about time to pack our car and head back home after a long day. But I just have to say that my first experience of fieldwalking was really inspiring, and if I'll have a chance to do that again, I'd love to!
