Tanskasta matka jatkui Ruotsin puolelle. Helsingborgin ja Helsingörin välisen Öresundin salmen liikenteen seuraamista varten oli 1420-luvulla rakennettu Helsingöriin linna, mutta seurantaa oli toimitettu sitä ennenkin, Helsingborgin puolelta (samaa Tanskaa kummatkin silloin). Ensimmäinen linnoitus rakennettiin paikalle 1100-luvulla, nykyinen Kärnan-torni on ainoa jäljellä oleva osa sen korvanneesta 1310-luvulla rakennetusta linnoituksesta. Alkujaan linnoitus oli laajempikin, aivan kunnon linna, mutta muu osa linnoituksesta hävitettiin 1600-luvun lopulla jolloin sen (ja koko Skånen) hallinnasta käytiin Tanskan ja Ruotsin välillä jatkuvaa kähinää. Torni jätettiin pystyyn maamerkiksi, ja nyt se sisi toimii museokohteena.
From Denmark we took a brief ferry trip to Sweden. Helsingör castle in Denmark was first built in the 1420s but even before that the boat traffic in Öresund strait was monitored from Helsingborg (which, at that time was a part of Denmark as well). The first fortress was built to this site in the 12th century, the Kärnan tower we see today was originally a part of a castle built in the 1310s. To begin with it was larger, a good and proper castle, but the other parts of it were demolished in the late 17th century when Sweden and Denmark were arguing on who owns Scania. Only the castle tower was left standing as a landmark, and nowadays it functions as a museum.
Tornissa on neljä kerrosta ja niiden päällä vielä kattotasanne, kerroksesta toiseen pääsi kierreportaita pitkin. Aikoinaan Helsingborgin linna (jonka osanen Kärnankin oli) toimi hallintolinnana, josta käsin hoidettiin mm. lähiseudun verotusta, mutta Kärnanin opastaulujen mukaan linnassa on myös järjestetty hallitsijoiden tapaamisia ja sovittu jopa valtioiden välisiä rauhansopimuksia ja muita kansainvälisiä sopimuksia.
Suurin osa linnan tiloista on tietysti ollut nykyisin puretuissa osissa, mutta tornissakin on ollut kaikenlaista. Sieltä on löytynyt oma privetti, toisen kerroksen uuni on mahdollisesti toiminut leivinuunina. Tornissa oli ollut myös erillinen linnanherran oma kappeli.
The tower is in four floors, and above those there is a terrace. The floors are connected by a spiral staircase. Originally the Helsingborg castle functioned as an admistrative castle, from which for example taxation was organized, but the information plagues in Kärnan also mention that the castle had been finctioned as a place where peace treaties and other contracts between countries were negociated.
Obviously most of the rooms of the castle were located in the parts that were demolished, but all kinds of activities were situated in the tower too. There had been a very own privy, and the fireplace in the second floor has perhaps functioned as a baking oven. Also the lord of the castle had his own chapel in the tower.
Kerroksissa oli esillä kylttejä linnan ja tornin elämästä ja elämästä keskiaikaisessa Helsingborgissa yleensäkin. Kylttien aiheet vaihtelivat tornin rakennushistoriasta keskiaikaiseen ruokakulttuuriin ja nukkumatapoihin.
As mentioned, there was all kinds of information plagues concerning the life and activities in the castle and in medieval Helsingborg. The subjects varied from building history to eating and sleeping habits.
Torni ehti hieman huonoon kuntoon ennen kun sitä alettiin kunnostaa 1900-luvun alussa. Oma osansa näyttelytiloista olikin omistettu Kärnanin korjausprosessista kertomiselle.
The tower was in fairly bad shape in the early 20th century, when restoration works finally begun. A part of the exhibition in Kärnan was dedicated to the restauration process.
Kärnanilla on korkeutta kaikkineen noin 35 metriä. Kierreportaita pitkin pääsi aivan ylös saakka, ylimpänä oli näköalatasanne. Aikoinaan siellä oli ollut tykkejä, nyt katolla on kiikareita.
Kärnan is 35 meters tall altogether. The spiral staircase was walkable all the way up to the roof where a lookout point was located. Originally there were cannons, nowadays there was binoculars.
Ja kuten arvata saattaa, näkymät tornin huipulta olivat varsin messevät. Vastarannalla siis Tanska.
And as one might expect, the scenery was nothing short of splendid. That's Denmark on the other shore!
