Vanha Uppsala ~~~ Old Uppsala

When returning from Öland we still had good time to spend and decided to spend it in Uppsala. All of the team were quite curious because none of us had visited Uppsala before, and it, of course, is a very remarkable place historically. And Uppsala being quite close to Stockholm, it was indeed easy to drop by.

Vanhan Uppsalan museosta aloitettiin.

We started from the Gamla Uppsala museum. I think it was more like a "visitor centre" than a museum, a lot of information there but relatively little items on display. The museum was in two floors, in first floor there was the museum shop and a timelinelinking together the world history and history of Uppsala region. The actual exhibitions were upstairs, and it was quite thorough in brigining forth the use and meaning of the area from the iron age to the medieval period, the mounds and the church. Also new information and test results were available concerning the burials in mounds, which were excavatd in the 19th century. All in all I was left with feeling that something was lacking, but it's hard to point out exactly what it was.

The "royal mounds" can well be considered as being one of the Swedish most iconic landscapes. And indeed they are very prominent! Because of erosion climbing to them was forbidden -and one could easily tell why, the paths were quite worn. The mounds date to the Migration period, c. 6th century. There are a lot of folklore and legends concerning the mounds, but in the museum the actual facts were well displayed -apparently all three are burial mounds, there are remains of cremation burials from both eastern and western mound. The middle mound has not been fully researched to grave depth.

The church has been erected in the 12th century to a site where several buildings had stood before -some suggest this had been the site of the famous Uppsala pagan temple mentioned in the chronicles of Adam of Bremen. Originally the church was larger, but after a fire in the 13th century and the construction of present-day Uppsala cathedral the church was repaired as somewhat smaller in size than it had been, and it was left as a parish church. Inside the church there were several items dating to a time before the renovation!
