Myöhäinen raportti Hiiden hirvestä ~~~ A very late report from Hiiden hirven hiihto

For a while it seemed like a no-go due to pretty awful weather conditions, but Hiiden hirven hiihto –an annual ancient skiing and archery event in Pukkisaari iron age village, Helsinki- did take place this year too! Emergency plans were set out and if Pukkisaari would've remained inaccessible, the event would've taken place in Seurasaari outdoor museum area. Luckily weather changed for better, and although we had no snow, we had enough ice to ski on -not the usual distance, around the tiny island, but a short distance none the less.

Sukset tämänhetkisessä olotilassaan ~~~ Our skis as they are now

We had our very own skis with us for the third year in a row, and they went through some modifications this year as well. The major modifications happened to the loop on the ski which is used to fasten the shoes, it was narrowed quite a lot. Too bad I don’t have photos of the process, but the modifications were indeed helpful. Skiing was much nicer now, although some “product development” is still needed. That’ll most likely happen on the day before the next Hiiden hirvi event… I also applied tar to the bottoms of the skis. That should result in better gliding, although I'm not sure if that really happened?

Virallinen joukkuekuva ~~~ The official team photo :)

Our team had a theme, too. We started out with thinking of famous groups of four, and what we came across was no less than the four horsemen of the apocalypse. And since we were to portray riders, we had to find ourselves some horses. We borrowed four hobby horses from Kuralan kylämäki museum... Yours truly had the honor of running/skiing/shooting first as Pestilence. And since the colours were fairly strictly determined by our theme, it caused some headache. Since pestilence's theme colour is white, and I couldn't think of any colour that would be more unpractical in february mud, I decided not to sew anything new and rather go with iron age finnish style and a mock-up peplos dress made of a bought blanket. I managed to find a blanket, which was of a good size, 130 x 180 cm, and rather inexpensive too! The minimum criteria of 100% wool and loom-woven (ie. not fleece fabric or knitted or anything like that) were also met, so that it'll have some re-enactment use in the future as well. A cloak had to be improvised from a really well felted blanket (it's actually waterproof!) which I usually use as a mattress cover when camping. While it kept the wind and cold at bay nicely, it was also pretty stiff. See for yourself :) We were apparently the only team that ran through the competition with historical, leather-soled shoes. Thank heavens for spare shoes and socks, they were thoroughly wet after the competition...

Ja mitä sijoitukseen tulee... No, emme olleet viimeisiä.  Toiseksi viimeisiä kylläkin, mutta eipä sinne varsinaisesti kilpailumentaliteetilla mentykään :D

And as for out ranking... Well, we weren't last! Second last, yes, but we didn't actually go for competition. Fun and games, rather :)
